This Portuguese project of cross-border cooperation in its origins, aims to work beyond the prevention of natural hazards, is coordinated by the Forestry and Environmental Association of Vila Pouca de Aguiar, together with other Portuguese associations such as the Breeders of Maronês, the Cabra Breeders Bravia, the National Goats of the Mountain Breed, and is financed by the program Promoting Frontier Regions of the La Caixa Foundation.
Herds Mais intends to use oriented pasture as a tool to manage natural spaces, prevent fires in a coordinated manner between different border territories and recover degraded areas. To this end, work will be done on the creation of models of georeferenced information systems (GIS) that, through a virtual platform, allow for risk prevention and adaptation to climate change in territories.
According to the coordinating entity, they also seek the collaboration of different actors for the appropriation of the model and its capacity for replication in other territories. In this sense, the platform will also have training tools and technical support so that they can be used by entrepreneurs in the sector who wish to adapt to the innovations proposed by Rebanhos Mais.
To achieve these goals, the initiative promotes the participation of administrations, farmers and consumers, based on the positive experience that the experience has already acquired in other territories such as Andalusia, Catalonia and several areas of the Pyrenees, where an improvement in the reduction of forest fires thanks the application of the methodology and resources derived from the project.
Digital platform and training
The possibilities for implementing the initiative in other territories are based on the creation of the digital platform included in the project, as this technical support is a tool for direct application to all those who wish to implement it.
